Preparing Your RV for Winter, Seven Tips!

RV InsuranceThe summer travel season has passed. It is time to put the RV away for another year. We at Steely and Smith hope you have insured your RV with us and are taking good care to be sure it is ready for another year of service. Meanwhile, here are a few good ideas as you prep your RV for winter storage. Enjoy the blog!

1. Drain the water – Water freezes at 32 degrees, and it expands. Water left in the system can cause severe issues with your system if you do not drain it appropriately and thoroughly. Taking your RV to the dealership for help is a good idea if you are not 100 percent sure on what to do.

2. Keep it safe – Park your RV in a secure and reliable place. Many choose to store their RV’s in a garage – the optimal solution. If not, certainly store it out of the wind and away from trees that could snap in severe weather.

3. Cover it, including the tiresRV manufacturers offer tarps and covers to help protect your RV from wind, rain, tree sap, droppings and UV rays. Tires are also susceptible to UV damage, so covering those is a good idea as well.

4. Disconnect and store the batteries – Put them in a cool, dry location. Be sure to check them every once and a while to make sure they still have a charge. Putting a charger on them once and a while is a good idea to keep them fresh.

5. Add fuel stabilizer – Gas can gunk up and even crystalize. Keeping fuel and fuel lines clean is essential. Fuel stabilizers are available at most big box and all automotive stores. Get enough to treat the entire system. Follow the directions on the bottle.

6. Seal it up – You don’t want freeloaders moving into your RV, and by freeloaders, this means squirrels, rodents, birds and the like. You want to be sure the RV is tightly sealed so you won’t have ,additional guests.

7. Insure with Steely and Smith – We already have your home, auto, and life, why not add your RV? Chances are we can bundle the entire package for you and save you, even more, money on your premiums. Give us a call; let us help you save money on your RV insurance.
