Fall Prep

house insurance rates Doylestown PAThe team at Steely and Smith love October.  The leaves are changing, the temperature is dropping and summer is on its way out.

We also realize it is time to get things packed up and put away until the spring.  That is why this month we are looking at some tips for you to get in order this fall so you can enjoy the time.

  1. Seal doors and windows – Making sure the cool air stays out and the warm in is a full-time job. Sealing the doors and windows makes sure you are saving money on your energy bill.
  2. Check the roof – We do not recommend you climb onto the roof at all. Stand on the ground and get a visual of the roof. If you note any inconsistencies, contact a roofing professional to come look at it.
  3. Gutters and downspouts – Same thing as the roof. We do not recommend you climbing on a ladder to do this. Hire a professional who can do it while you are at work.  Clean gutters keep water moving and not freezing, causing serious problems.
  4. Smoke and Carbon monoxide detectors – We recommend doing this at time change. That way you know you are doing it consistently every year. Any problems encountered means you should probably have an electrician come in and replace them.
  5. Chimneys – If you have a chimney, have it inspected and cleaned.  A professional should check gas lines and vents if you have gas for your fireplace.
  6. Firewood – Your firewood should be well seasoned since you cut it last year for this year. Make sure it stays good and dry. Also, keep your wood about 30 feet from the home.  A termite does not know the difference between your home and firewood.
  7. Lawn equipment – Time to put this stuff up as well. Drain your lawnmower and other power tools completely. Pull the battery cable loose also so your battery will not drain completely.

Finally, be sure all of your insurance needs are met with your friends at Steely and Smith.  Contact us when you are ready for a new policy or any changes you may need to make to existing insurance.
